More fuel, more storage, more certainty
for local families and businesses
Local families, farmers and small businesses need confidence that fuel will be there when they need it, especially in times of crisis.
Federal Member for Page Kevin Hogan has backed a practical plan to strengthen Australia’s fuel security, including more storage, higher minimum reserves, and better monitoring of supply.
Mr Hogan said fuel shortages hit regional communities first and hardest.
“In communities like ours, fuel isn’t optional, it’s essential,” Mr Hogan said. “If the diesel doesn’t turn up, farms don’t run, freight stops, and supermarket shelves don’t get stocked.”
“That’s why we need more fuel stored here in Australia, and more certainty for regional communities like ours.”
The Coalition’s plan includes:
- More than doubling Australia’s minimum fuel reserves to 60 days, giving the country a stronger buffer against global shocks
- An $800 million Australian Fuel Security Facility to deliver at least one billion litres of new fuel storage capacity
- Lifting minimum stockholding requirements from 1 January 2027, increasing fuel held in Australia by around 25 per cent
- A clear roadmap with industry to build storage and increase supply over time, with a target of 60 days’ fuel security by 2030
- Improved transparency, including calls for better real-time monitoring of fuel supplies so Australians are not left in the dark during disruptions
Mr Hogan said the plan would help protect key industries across the Northern Rivers, including agriculture, transport and small business.
“Our local economy depends on reliable fuel supply. Whether it’s getting produce to market, keeping machinery running, or supporting local jobs,” he said. “We’ve seen how quickly global events can disrupt supply chains. We can’t afford to be exposed.”
“This is about being prepared — making sure Australia can stand on its own two feet when global shocks hit,” he said. “Regional Australians deserve certainty. This is a practical plan that can be implemented.”
