THE HON. KEVIN HOGAN MP
FEDERAL MEMBER FOR PAGE
SHADOW ASSISTANT TREASURER
SHADOW MINISTER FOR FINANCIAL SERVICES
Media Release
Not good enough Coles.
Federal Member for Page Kevin Hogan has called on Coles to reconsider its decision to stop selling locally grown North Coast bananas and other fresh produce in local stores.
The decision will have a significant impact on local farming families and the wider agricultural industry across the region. Local growers have spent years supplying fresh produce to stores in their own communities, supporting local jobs and contributing to the North Coast economy.
Bananas will now be trucked 1,600km from North Queensland despite being grown right here on the North Coast.
“Our farmers work hard, employ locals and produce some of the best food in Australia. This decision is wrong. We should be backing our local farmers and buying Australian produce grown right here in our region.
Coles needs to reconsider this decision and back the communities that support their stores.” Mr Hogan said.
The decision comes at a time when farming families are already facing rising input costs and pressures across the agricultural sector.
A local petition has been started calling on Coles to reverse the decision and support local farmers.
