Putting Australian values and local communities first
We deserve a migration system that is fair, well-managed and working in Australia’s national interest.
Federal Member for Page Kevin Hogan has backed the Coalition’s Australian Values Migration Plan, which aims to restore integrity to the migration system, reduce pressure on housing and services, and ensure stronger standards are applied.
Mr Hogan said migration plays an important role in Australia, but it must be properly managed.
“Australia has always been a great migrant nation, and our community reflects that,” Mr Hogan said. “But the system has to be fair, controlled and in the national interest. Right now, people know it’s not working as it should.”
Mr Hogan said rapid population growth has placed real pressure on local housing, infrastructure and services.
“People in our community are feeling it. Whether it’s housing availability, rental affordability, or pressure on local services,” he said. “We need a system that supports growth, but also supports the communities people are coming into.”
The Coalition’s plan includes three key measures:
- Putting Australian values at the centre of the system
- Making the Australian Values Statement a binding condition for visa holders
- Allowing visas to be refused or cancelled where those values are not upheld
- Prioritising migrants who demonstrate alignment with Australian values
- Ensuring taxpayer-funded benefits are focused on Australian citizens first
- Shutting the door to system abuse
- Introducing a Safe Country List to fast-track the refusal of unfounded claims
- Restoring Temporary Protection Visas and Safe Haven Enterprise Visas
- Providing more resources to identify and remove unlawful non-citizens
- Strengthening security and screening
- Establishing an Enhanced Screening Coordination Centre
- Expanding social media checks as a standard part of visa screening
- Improving coordination between agencies to identify risks in real time
“Living in Australia is a privilege, and our migration system should reflect that,” he said. “This is about making sure the system works for Australians, supports our communities, and maintains confidence in how it is run.”
Mr Hogan said the plan will also help ease pressure on housing and cost of living.
“When migration is too high and poorly managed, it puts extra strain on housing and pushes up costs,” he said. “This plan is about getting that balance right.
Further measures under the Australian Values Migration Plan will be announced in due course.
