Ballina Byron Gateway Airport is ranked nationally in the top 10 regional airports. The runway needs a major upgrade to ensure larger aircraft can land.
Federal Member for Page Kevin Hogan today announced $10 million to widen and strengthen the existing runway.
“Over 530,000 passengers arrive at this airport every year,” Mr Hogan said.
“Every single person who arrives here, especially tourists, support jobs in our community.”
“We need and want them to continue to come here.”
“This $23 million upgrade will bring more people into our region.”
“By expanding the runway from 30-metres to 45-metres, larger aircraft are able to land.”
Ballina Shire Council Mayor David Wright said this announcement is important for our region’s growth.
“This is exciting, not only for Ballina, but for the entire Norther Rivers,” Cr Wright said.
“We are currently limited by a 30-metre wide runway, all other major regional airports have a 45-metre runway.”
“There has been a strong and sustained demand for our Airport’s services, this funding will ensure we continue to grow.”
The Federal Government provided $10 million towards this $23 million project. It has been funded through the Building Better Regions Fund.
