Southern Cross University Student Guild and its Lismore based affiliate, LEXSA (Lismore and External Students Association), have welcomed the renovations to student common rooms and the advocacy offices at the Lismore campus which were funded by the Student Services and Amenities Fee (SSAF).
The federal Member for Page Kevin Hogan officially opened the $55,000 worth of facilities’ upgrades today (March 12).
Upgrades to the student common room, located at Goodman Plaza, include: repainting; new carpet and vinyl; a new small meeting room with mounted TV; upgrade to the parent room; new furniture; new 3-in-1 water boiler, fridge, microwave and dishwater; two new student computers; improved security features like swipe card access; CCTV and help phone.
Upgrades to the advocacy offices, also at Goodman Plaza, include: repainting; new carpet and vinyl; two new offices, reception and hot desk; new desks, computers and phones; swipe card access.
The Z block student common room upgrades include: new vinyl; new fridge and TV; new 3-in-1 water boiler.
Mr Hogan said the new student common rooms and advocacy offices were yet another reason why people thinking about studying should consider courses at Southern Cross University.
“Student organisations play a crucial role on regional campuses where students can’t as readily access services compared to those studying on a metro university campus,” he said.
“I congratulate LEXSA and the Student Guild for these new facilities that will be welcomed and well-used by the student body.”
LEXSA president Jeff Imeson thanked Mr Hogan for officially opening the facilities.
“Making students feel at home is integral to their success at university. Without SSAF funding we could not provide Advocacy Services and Common Rooms at SCU,” said Mr Imeson.
“I would also like to thank my predecessor, Benjamin Bullivant, for his tireless efforts in making the Lismore campus a more inviting place to learn.”
Professor Andrew McAuley Pro Vice Chancellor (Academic) said the University worked closely with LEXSA to improve the facilities.
“These improvements represent the outcomes of close co-operation between my office, in particular Paola Bolzicco, and the student representatives from LEXSA.
“It is especially pleasing to see the creation of infrastructure to enhance the student experience here on the Lismore campus for the coming years.”
The Student Services and Amenities Fee (SSAF) is charged to students for student services and amenities of a non-academic nature. The SSAF funding may be spent by university and other higher education providers on items such as advocacy, student events, employment and career advice, sporting and recreational activities, child care, financial advice, support of student associations and food services.
