Federal member for Page Kevin Hogan said more than $26 million will be poured into repairing and maintaining local roads in the Northern Rivers and Clarence Valley thanks to the expansion of the Federal Government’s Roads to Recovery programme.
“As part of the Federal Government’s ongoing commitment to improve local roads, funding to councils in the Northern Rivers and Clarence Valley will soar to more than $26 million over the next two years,” Mr Hogan said.
“This is a very significant increase from the less than $5 million annually our five councils collectively received when the Coalition came to office.”
This financial year Ballina Council will receive $1.7 million up from $552,000 in 2013/14, Clarence Valley $4.2 million up from $2 million, Kyogle $2.1 million up from $803,000, Lismore $2.5 million up from $913, 484 and Richmond Valley $2 million up from $692,716.
“This is great news for our community who are frustrated by the poor condition of our local roads. Since this government was elected, we have expanded this popular programme to help local councils future-proof our roads.
“Importantly, the Roads to Recovery Programme allow councils to directly fund local road projects based on local needs, with local knowledge paying a major role in the programme’s success.
Last month, Mr Hogan also announced almost $3 million in funding to fix seven dangerous black spots on local roads.
